Joshua has worked extensively in television and film as a historical consultant, writer, and on-screen expert, helping to bring the past vividly to life for modern audiences. He’s written, presented, and contributed to a number of acclaimed TV and radio documentaries, including Who Do You Think You Are, Fighting The Red Baron, and the Dunkirk, The New Evidence.
Known for his clarity, warmth, and deep historical knowledge, Joshua brings real authenticity to the screen, whether advising behind the scenes or sharing stories in front of the camera. His work always focuses on the human experience at the heart of history, combining rigorous research with a storyteller’s touch.
Behind the scenes
Joshua was the historical advisor on Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk (2017), a film inspired by his bestselling book Forgotten Voices of Dunkirk. More recently, he was the history consultant on World War II in Numbers (2019), The Blitz with Lucy Worsley (2021), and he worked with Steve McQueen on Blitz (2024), with his research from his book The Secret History of the Blitz helping to shape the project. In 2005, he was the writer and assistant producer of Handel’s Water Music, a BBC documentary exploring the music’s historical background, and featuring a recreation of its epic first performance in 1717.
